About Lanny Floyd

Lanny Floyd is an expert, consultant, author, speaker and educator in occupational electrical safety. He received his BSEE from VA Tech in 1973.  Lanny’s 45+ year career with DuPont focused on electrical safety in the construction, operation and maintenance of DuPont facilities worldwide.  His responsibilities included improving management systems, competency renewal, work practices, and the application of technologies critical to electrical safety performance in all DuPont operations. He has published more than 90 peer reviewed papers and magazine articles on occupational electrical safety. He has received awards and recognition from leading institutions for his work to advance the practice of occupational electrical safety. Lanny is an adjunct faculty member in the graduate school of Advanced Safety Engineering and Management (ASEM) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He retired from DuPont in 2014 as Principal Consultant and Global Electrical Safety Competency Leader.

Selected Accomplishments

Leading Organizational Change for Sustainable Electrical Safety Performance

  • Designed and led implementation of the strategy for continuous and sustainable improvement in occupational electrical safety for DuPont Global Operations. This work enabled breakthrough performance in prevention of serious injuries and fatalities from contact with electrical energy. With the implementation of these advanced methods of electrical safety management, there have been zero electrocution fatalities for both employees and contractors from 1993 to 2016.
  • Designed and provided leadership for creation of a professional network of electrical safety practitioners to facilitate advancements in codes, standards, regulations, technology and management systems essential to advancements impacting electrical safety. This network, launched in 1991, evolved into the IEEE Electrical Safety Committee and IEEE Electrical Safety Workshop and is recognized has having changed the electrical safety culture and accelerating improvements in electrical safety.

Preparing the Next Generation of Safety Professionals

  • The University of Alabama at Birmingham invited Lanny to join the faculty of its Engineering School of Advanced Safety Engineering and Management. Lanny developed the curricula and is teaching Electrical Systems Safety in the Master of Engineering program.
